I ahve come to know him as an outstanding teacher as well, but his natural gifts and total dedication have made not just an excellent musiican but a great violinist of him" Yehudi Menuhin Grigori Zhislin is Jury Member for the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in Britain Grigori Zhislin was born in Leningrad (St Petersburg). He studied in the Conservatory of his native city with Yuri Yankelevitch. At the age of 22 he won the First prize in the Paganini Competition (Italy), which was followed with the Silver Medal in the Queen Elizabeth International Music Competition in Belgium.Grigori Zhislin appeared as soloist with the leading Russian and European orchestras including the St Petersburg Philharmonic, Moscow Philharmonic, Sate Symphony Orchestra as well as RAI (Milano, Torino), ABC Orchestras (Australia), Staatskapelle Dresden, Gewandhausorchester, Leipzig, Wiener Sinfoniker, Sinfonia Varsovia, Warsaw National Philharmonic, Cracow Philharmonic, Stockholm Radio Orcheestra, Bergen Harmonien and the Lithuanian National Philharmonic. He has collaborated with famous conductors including Herbert Blomsted, Aldo Ceccato, Erik Klass, Karl Osterreicher, Kiril Kondraschin, Dimitri Kitaenko, Alexandr Lazarew, Arvid Jansons, Yuri Temirkanov, Maris Jansons, Woldemar Nelsson, Saulius Sondeckis, Tadeusz Strugala, Natan Rakhlin, Noeme Jarvi and Vladimir Fedoseyev.. He was the creator of the Pendereski Violin Concerto. He is regularly invited to international music festivals, including the Moscow Stars, Warsaw Autumn, Prague Spring, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival and the Pablo Casals Festival in Puerto Rico. He participates regularly as jury member for international competitions such as the Paganini in Genoa, Montreal, Citta de Brescia, Henryk Wieniawski in Poland and the Yehudi Menuhin Competition in Britain. Zhislin has cooperated closely with composers such as Schnittke, Denisov, Sofia Gubaydullina and Krystof Penderecki. He gave the first performance in Russia of Penderecki's Violin Concerto. Working closely together they have recorded all of Penderecki's violin and viola works. In 1983, at Penderecki's request, Zhislin began to play the viola in order to give the first European performance of Pendereki's Viola Concerto. Penderecki dedicated his Cadenza per Viola solo to Zhislin. Since 1990, Grigori Zhislin has made his base in London. He continues his highly influential concert performances all over the world. He is a Professor of Violin and Viola at the Royal College of Music, a visiting professor in Würzburg, Poland, Finland and Norway he gives master classes in France, Norway and the USA.
